Go Back

Lima, Peru – In response to the accusation that the Autonomous Territorial Government of the Wampis Nation (GTANW) has repeatedly made about the alleged breach by GeoPark -the operator of the Morona Project in Block 64 in the district of Morona, Datem del Maranon (Loreto)- of measures issued by the Government of Peru to prevent Covid-19, GeoPark publicly states:

• Since March 15, 2020, by order of the company’s Socioenvironmental Department and in anticipation of the measures issued by the National Government through the Peruvian Government Supreme Decree No°044-PCM-2020, no GeoPark employee has visited, held meetings or has had physical contact with neighboring communities in the Morona Project’s areas of direct or indirect influence. The project is in the Morona district of Datem del Maranon province in Loreto region. This measure was implemented to guarantee the health and well-being of the Achuar, Wampis, Shapra, Awajun and Shawis indigenous populations in the Morona basin, in the district of the same name.

• On the same date, March 15, 2020, GeoPark confined a small number of employees to the Morona Camp to carry out maintenance work within the Camp’s perimeter, and extended their shifts.

• GeoPark asks GTANW to correct the information it has released about GeoPark’s actions, as it has created misinformation and unnecessary concern in the communities in Morona district.

• In response to the steady flow of false information that GTANW has been releasing about the Company’s actions, GeoPark has brought and will continue to bring these unfounded complaints to the attention of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Culture, Perupetro, the Loreto Regional Government, Morona Municipality, the Ombudsman’s Office, and other relevant authorities.
