GeoPark Strengthens its Human Rights Commitment with the Launch of its Protocol to Protect People in Situations of Risk or Threat

This new Protocol establishes concrete prevention and response measures to address human rights risks, with a differential approach, institutional coordination and a commitment to vulnerable groups.

GeoPark, a leading independent energy company, reaffirms its commitment to the promotion, respect, and guarantee of human rights through the implementation of its Protocol to Contribute to the Protection of Individuals in Situations of Risk or Threat in the territories where it operates in Colombia.

This Protocol is part of the Due Diligence pillar of GeoPark’s Human Rights System and serves as a control mechanism for the risks identified in its operational areas. Its purpose is to prevent, identify and address situations that may compromise the life, integrity or safety of any person in the context of business activity.

The Protocol is aligned with the highest international standards, including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and GeoPark’s own Human Rights Policy.

This Protocol is a clear step forward in strengthening human rights protections and enhances our institutional capacity to act with transparency, build safe environments, and establish effective dialogue channels,” stated Santiago Martínez, Sustainability Director at GeoPark.

GeoPark firmly believes that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. The Protocol adopts a differential approach that provides bespoke prevention and response measures to the specific needs of more vulnerable groups, such as women, LGBTQ+ individuals, ethnic communities, migrants, children and adolescents, people with disabilities and human rights defenders. The Company categorically rejects any direct or indirect action that may result in threats, physical harm, or undue limitations to their fundamental rights. This commitment extends throughout the Company’s value chain, including contractors and partners.

The Protocol is also linked with GeoPark’s grievance and inquiry mechanisms such as Cuéntame, through which the Company provides physical community spaces in urban areas of the municipalities where it operates to listen to concerns, provide solutions and build respectful relationships with neighboring communities.

In line with the principle of complementarity, GeoPark also promotes institutional coordination with government authorities and competent institutions through this mechanism, contributing to the comprehensive protection of individuals in situations of risk— based on their consent and with full respect for their decisions.

This new milestone further strengthens GeoPark’s Human Rights System, which is embedded in its SPEED Integrated Values System that prioritizes safety, shared prosperity, environmental protection, community development and respect for people.
