GeoPark Strengthens its Commitment to Human Rights and Cultural Diversity with the Launch of its Ethnic Engagement Protocol - GeoPark

The Company deepens its commitment to cultural diversity by implementing a protocol that promotes intercultural dialogue, informed participation, and respect for the identities of ethnic communities in all its areas of operation.

GeoPark, a leading independent energy company in Latin America, has further strengthened its human rights framework by launching its Ethnic Engagement Protocol. The document establishes guidelines to promote respectful, transparent, and culturally appropriate interaction with ethnic communities living in the areas where the Company operates.

This tool is part of the Due Diligence pillar of GeoPark’s Human Rights System and promotes actions across GeoPark’s workforce and value chain in respect of human rights and the cultural diversity of ethnic communities—recognizing their autonomy, identity, and traditional knowledge in every interaction.

“Intercultural dialogue requires preparation, active listening, and genuine commitment. This Protocol is a fundamental tool to ensure harmonious relationships with the ethnic communities neighboring our operations, in full respect of their rights and recognition of their cultural identity,” said Santiago Martínez, Sustainability Director.

Aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and with prior consultation legislation in the countries where it operates, the Protocol outlines concrete actions for each stage of engagement:

  • Before entering the territory: social and environmental assessments, identification of ethnic authorities, and institutional validation for the need of prior consultation.
  • During project execution: continuous dialogue, differentiated approach, promotion of local employment, and effective participation.
  • At project closure: respectful communication, assessment of commitments, and attention to remaining impacts.

The Protocol is also connected with GeoPark’s grievance and inquiry mechanisms, such as Cuéntame — an engagement platform adapted to the indigenous languages of ethnic communities to ensure accessibility and cultural relevance. This channel allows communities to share concerns, complaints, or proposals, always engaging with trained and community-accepted personnel.

The implementation of this Protocol reinforces GeoPark’s commitment to building trust-based relationships founded on mutual respect, informed participation, and the co-creation of shared value with indigenous peoples, Afro-descendant populations, and other ethnic communities in its areas of operation.

GeoPark continues to move forward in strengthening its responsible social and environmental management, as well as its Human Rights System, embedded in the SPEED Integrated Values System, and reaffirms its willingness to work hand-in-hand with neighboring communities to contribute to sustainable development, territorial harmony, and the protection of fundamental rights.
