GeoPark held an online training session for journalists and communicators in Casanare that reflected on the role of journalism in defending human rights, especially in sensitive territorial contexts.

Over 20 journalists from regional media took part in the training, which covered key areas such as the importance of human rights in the exercise of journalism, journalists as holders and protectors of human rights and the role of companies in human rights, as well as other practical issues to strengthen a rights-based reporting approach.

GeoPark presented its Protocol for Ethnic Relations and its Protocol to Protect People in Situations of Risk or Threat, which are fundamental parts of the Company’s Human Rights System. Both protocols were designed to prevent risks, establish clear routes of action in sensitive situations and ensure a respectful relationship with ethnic communities and people in vulnerable conditions, in accordance with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Supporting sensitive, ethical journalism committed to guaranteeing human rights, the training also shared practical tools developed by the Foundation for Press Freedom (FLIP) and other expert organizations.

“Journalism is critical to democracy and protecting rights. A rights-based reporting approach can make a difference in territories with historical tensions or inequalities. This is why GeoPark supports training like this, which is part of our commitment to operate respectfully and build trust with all stakeholders in the territories we operate in,” GeoPark’s Sustainability Leader Maria Luisa Villa said.

GeoPark’s sustainability strategy and its Human Rights System acknowledges that training is a key enabler of its human rights due diligence, and underscores the Company’s commitment to transparent, preventive, and respectful operations in all the territories where it works.
