Sucumbios, Ecuador – With support and coordination from the Decentralized Autonomous Government of the Province of Sucumbios, GeoPark has started a reforestation and recovery project around water sources to restore tree cover in Shushufindi.

Over a period of four months, more than 25,000 timber and fruit trees will be planted around the Shushufindi, La Sur and Eno rivers, as well as around streams and pools in the area of influence of the Espejo block, which the Company operates. The reforestation activities in this area will contribute to the permanent stabilization of rivers and their buffer zones.

The reforestation program has several phases that include the socialization of activities with beneficiary communities in Shushufindi, the planting process, training sessions for communities focused on forest crop management, natural regeneration and reforestation, and the monitoring and follow-up of the planting process to verify implementation and growth.

The project’s first socialization activity took place during the third week of December when landowners and members of the Miss Ecuador pre-cooperative had the opportunity to learn about the initiative and received the first 1,000 timber trees and 100 fruit trees to begin the reforestation activities.

“Our commitment is to consolidate a more sustainable environment and we believe that the best way to achieve this objective is by valuing our natural resources and developing initiatives that, like this one, allow us to create value for the long term,” said Maria Gabriela Moreta, GeoPark Environmental and Neighbor Relations Manager, on the occasion.

Through the project, GeoPark continues to progress in its objective of becoming a regional development partner. The Company will continue to lead this kind of project to contribute to the fulfillment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
